Connie Morgan
It has long been on my heart to create some sort of virtual community dedicated to helping women navigate motherhood, marriage and other traditionally feminine roles and responsibilities. There are influencers, resources and experts out there who have wonderful things to say but I have yet to find a place talking about or thinking about all the things I am talking about and thinking about as a mom and wife. How to deal with race. How to educate. How to prioritize spending. How to navigate vaccines. How to balance relationships. Should we do sleepovers? Free Black Moms (FBM) is my attempt to tackle a lot of these issues in one place.
Free Black Moms seeks to equip moms with the information and resources to liberate themselves from stereotypes, toxic culture, or misinformation that keeps them from freely raising their families as they see fit. We have a goal and that goal is undergirded by a philosophy that supports building a culture of life. A culture that celebrates, honors and protects life. Free Black Moms is not a religious organization and our explicit goal is not to push a faith-based agenda. We believe there is space for anyone whether religious or not in a culture-of-life movement. However, the women behind the scenes at FBM are all faithful Christians approaching the world with that lens.
Why Free Black Moms and not just Free Moms? The same reason we are Free Black Thought and not just Free Thought. Free Black Thought formed to push back against the narrative that black people act as a monolith of thought and action. Free Black Moms aims to push back against the narrative that black motherhood has a prescribed aesthetic, value system or parenting method. In a real sense FBM pushes back against the concept of “black motherhood” at all. There is only motherhood.
As Free Black Thought operates as a free speech absolutist organization, FBM is a free moms absolutist organization. We believe in a mother’s God given authority over her children. We may individually disagree with the parenting method you are adopting but we will still fight for your right to do so.
My mothering-related content for Free Black Thought has received more positive feedback than any of my other works. From my piece on black homeschooling to my list of Picture Book Recommendations I have been asked by quite a few in our FBT audience to write more on these topics and provide more resources for the heterodox moms and dads out there. This is what FBM aims to do.
A website, online journal, podcast episodes and other goodies are forthcoming. For now, check us out on Twitter @FreeBlackMoms and subscribe at our new Substack: journaloffreeblackmoms.substack.com.
